Set up in 6 steps
- Put it on your home screen
Open the website in Chrome (Android) or Safari (iPhone), then use the Install box, or Share > Add to Home Screen on iPhone. Use Safari on iPhone, not a browser inside another app. Open the app once while online so it can store itself. After that it opens like any app and works with no signal.
- Name your team
Setup > Team and goalkeepers > Team name. This is the team name that appears on your reports.
- Add your goalkeepers
Setup > Goalkeepers > Add goalkeeper. There is one list for the whole app. If you coach the U14, U15 and U16 keepers, add them all once; you choose the keeper for each quarter of each match from this list. Use first names or initials only.
- Check the age groups, format and lists
In Setup choose a Default age group and a Default format (Full field, Indoor or Hockey5s). Then scroll to Lists and counting rules, pick a format and read through its buttons (save actions, techniques, outcomes). Age groups are one shared list; every other list belongs to its own format. Do not rename an option that already has data logged against it: add a new one instead.
- Log your first match
Matches > New match. Pick the format and age group, then on the Defence tab pick the goalkeeper for the quarter and tap through each attack as it happens. Submit at the final whistle. To look around first, tap Try with demo data on an empty Matches screen, then clear it with Setup > Delete all data before you start for real.
- Save a backup
Setup > Your data > Back up all matches. Everything lives on this phone only, so save a backup file now and then and keep it somewhere safe, such as emailed to yourself.
Coaching several age groups?
- Keep one goalkeeper list. Age group is chosen per match, not per keeper, so the same keeper can appear in a U14 and a U16 game.
- Set the Default age group to the team you log most, and change it in New match when needed.
- On the Dashboard, filter by Goalkeeper, Age group, Opponent, Format or dates to see one keeper across all teams, or one team across all keepers.
Match day
- Start a match
- Matches > New match. Fill in Opponent, Our team, Format, Age group, Date and Start time, then tap Start capturing. The format is locked once the first entry is logged.
- Pick the quarter and goalkeeper
- Choose the quarter (or half) at the top and the goalkeeper for it from the dropdown. Choose "Add new goalkeeper..." if someone is missing. Change the goalkeeper when the quarter changes. The screen stays awake while you capture.
- Tap through each attack
- 1. Play made (Full field: open play, free hit in 23, sideline restart in 23, restart 23, penalty corner, penalty stroke; Hockey5s has a challenge). 2. Circle entry: tap where the attack came from on the diagram, choosing Ground or Aerial first (Indoor has Ground and Crash, no Aerial; Hockey5s uses a zone grid). 3. What the goalkeeper did, or No save made. 4. How the save was made, with a Skip button. 5. Full field only: where the save was made, one of 20 zones out from the goal (within 3 m, 3 to 6, 6 to 10, 10 to 14 m), with a Skip button. 6. How the attack ended. The entry saves when you tap the outcome.
- Quick log: zone, then one button
- Quick log is the fast way to capture. Tap where the shot came from on the diagram, then one button: Save, Wide, Goal conceded (no chance for the keeper) or Save missed (the keeper mistimed or misjudged it and a goal went in). Both goal buttons count as a goal against; Save missed is also counted separately so you can see keeper errors. After Save you can tap where the ball ended up. More has penalty corner conceded and penalty stroke. The Play made chip at the top changes the play for the next entries. Detailed switches to the full step-by-step capture and Quick log switches back, and what you have already tapped is kept. To add more to an entry you already logged (how the save was made, where), press Detail last: it opens that entry in Detailed and saves into the same entry. Hockey5s opens in Quick log; turn it on or off for each format in Setup.
- When did it happen?
- Every entry remembers the real time you logged it, and the app works out the minute of the match from the kick-off time (Details) and the time each half or quarter started. There is no timer to run. The first tap in a new half or quarter notes its start; you can correct it under Details. The logged time is never overwritten, even if you edit the entry later. The Review and Dashboard show how the keeper did in blocks of 5 minutes (2 minutes in Hockey5s).
- Logging after the match
- If you log from a recording or your notes, open Details and set How events are timed to Post-match capture (the app also offers it when the match looks finished). Entries are tagged as post-match, the clock is not used, and you can type the minute above the diagram so they still land in the right time block. Entries added by hand in the Log work the same way. You can type a minute on any entry when you edit it.
- Fix a mistake
- Undo reverses the last change. Back and Clear step back inside an unfinished entry. Tap any entry under Latest to edit or delete it, or use the Log tab to edit every entry in a table.
- Shootouts
- Open the Shootout tab. Each attempt walks through goalkeeper, entry direction, contact point, shot at goal, up to two save steps and the outcome. Retakes are not counted.
- Finish the match
- Open Details to add goals for, the official goals against and coach notes. Tap Submit match. The app lists anything to check, such as a quarter with no keeper or goals that do not match the score. Submitting adds the match to the Dashboard and locks its entries; Reopen returns it to a draft.
| Format | Periods | Where the attack is tapped | Set piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full field | 4 quarters of 15 min | The circle (D), 14.63 m radius | Penalty corner |
| Indoor | 4 quarters of 10 min | The circle (D), 9.3 m radius; Ground and Crash ball only | Penalty corner |
| Hockey5s | 2 halves of 10 min | A 9-zone grid over the attacking half: any shot once the attackers are past the halfway line | Challenge (a Play made option) |
After the match
- Review
- One match against your all-match averages, with the entry map, rebound quality, goals conceded, a short note headed Why are we conceding? and your coach notes. With Gloveside Attack the Review opens on Both: Defence first, then Attack on its own printed page, then for-and-against bars and the coach notes. Use the Both, Defence and Attack buttons to print one side only. Print or save as PDF for a handout, or copy the text summary.
- Gloveside Attack (separate unlock)
- Log your own team's attacks in the Attack tab of a match, and get an Attack report from the same match file as the Defence report. Pick which goal you attack (Switch ends after half time). Each attack takes three steps: 1. tap where we got the ball, 2. tap each block the ball went through, in order, 3. say how it ended (a circle entry from the top, 45 or baseline on either side, lost the ball in a tackle or by a loose pass, a foul, a free hit, out of play; Hockey5s has Attack reached goal) and, for a circle entry, what came of it (no shot, off target, on target, goal, penalty corner or penalty stroke awarded). A checklist under the pitch shows what is still missing, and nothing is saved until you press Log attack. Quick is one tap per block and suits a phone. Detailed gives 16 touch points in every block and records short pass, long ball, aerial ball or carry on every move; it is built for screens of 7 inch and bigger. Switching between Quick and Detailed keeps your taps. Detail last reopens the attack you just logged. Zones are from your team's point of view: lane 1 is your left as you face the goal you attack. The Attack report shows circle efficiency (goals, penalty corners, penalty strokes and shots on target that forced a save, out of circle entries), entry points, maps, how attacks ended, how they moved and plain-English notes. Without the key the Attack tab shows a sample report. Defence is never affected. Unlock it in Setup > Licence with an Attack key (it starts with GA1). Attacks logged in version 2.2 are upgraded automatically.
- Dashboard
- All submitted matches together. Filter by Goalkeeper, Age group, Opponent, Format and dates. Percentages from very few shots are greyed. When formats are mixed, compare save % within a format, not across formats.
- Shootouts
- Stop % and save % across all shootout attempts, by goalkeeper, entry direction and contact point.
- Export this goalkeeper
- Setup > Your data > Export this goalkeeper (or the Export button on the Dashboard when a goalkeeper is picked). Choose a goalkeeper, and one match or a date range if you like. You get a CSV with only that goalkeeper's circle entries, shootouts and summary, and a one-page report to print or save as PDF. Other goalkeepers' names and figures, and the coach's match notes, are left out, so it is safe to hand to the keeper or their parents.
- Backups and other phones
- Setup > Your data > Back up all matches saves a file. To restore or move to a new phone, install the app and use Open a backup or spreadsheet, then Add to my data. Export to spreadsheet gives CSV files for Excel.
- Updates
- When a new version is ready the app says so the next time it is online. It only updates when you tap Update now, so nothing changes in the middle of a match.
Tips and troubleshooting
- Free trial: you get 30 days from the first time you open the app on a phone. After that the app is read-only: you can still view, print and export everything, but not log new matches. Enter a licence key under Setup > Licence to continue. Nothing is ever deleted.
- Log one attack, not one shot. One circle entry (in Hockey5s, one attack) is one attack on goal, even with several shots or rebounds.
- Buttons off the screen or too small: tap Report a screen problem on the Matches tab. It shows the phone model and screen size so we can fix it. It is only sent when you tick the box.
- Entries in the wrong quarter: open the Log tab and edit the entry.
- Wrong format on a match: Details > Format, but only before the first entry is logged.
- No Install button on iPhone is normal. Use Safari, then Share > Add to Home Screen.
- Data seems to vanish or storage is blocked: you are probably in a private window or an in-app browser. Open the address in Chrome or Safari and install it.
- A button is missing or mislabelled: edit it under Setup > Lists and counting rules, for the format you are logging.
- Delete all data erases matches, team name, goalkeepers and lists on this phone. Save a backup first.
